Meatless Monday & Sacred Saturday at the Michigan Theater

Things are a little unusual at the Michigan Theater this week.

On Monday Morrissey perform at our theater. On his contract for preforming it stated he requires the entire venue where he performs to be “meatless” The entire staff was asked to bring in a vegatarian lunch or go out to lunch if they wanted to eat meat. We also had to get approval to serve butter on our popcorn and cream for our coffee, since they are animal by products.

When he went on stage for his sound check the entire building smelled like cedar. I’ve worked at the theater for over 7 years and never experienced a performer wanting a certain smell in the theater before they performed. (I found out later that “his people” spray every venue where he performs with a special colonge from England that he likes. Supposedly it is expensive and he has over 200 bottles of the stuff!) I think it is a little much. We can’t eat meat and now we have to inhale his favorite scent for several hours, how rude!

This Saturday lengendary Little Richard is performing on our stage and his contract requires that he not go on stage until sundown on Saturday. (Since it is his Sabbeth day and he believes he shouldn’t work on the Sabbeth) So we have a warm-up band that will play until sundown and around 9:15 p.m. he goes on stage. Also in his contract he states that he is allowed to hand out Christian literature to everyone at the concert.

Yes, it is really true. About 10 boxes of a Christian book called “Finding Peace Within: A book for people in Need …” arrived. I wonder how this will be distributed? I wonder if he will preach? I wonder will he pray? I wonder if he will have an alter call? I wonder if people will walk out?

I will just have to wonder because I’m out of town on the day of the show. I’m looking forward to the stories on Monday morning.

Oh … in my last blog entry someone asked who are “The Killers”. They are a popular group with those in their 20’s and 30’s and they play rock/pop music. They aren’t real killers, nor do they promote killing. I think they got the name from common slang that young folks say, like: “That event was so killer!” I think killer means good. I’m in my 40’s so I’m not quite sure.
